# Food Labels

> Custom food labels for chilled, frozen and dry products: freezer-grade adhesives, condensation-resistant materials and space for required text.

Category: labels · Minimum order: From 50 units · Lead time: Typically 7–12 working days after artwork approval

## The conditions decide the label

Food labels fail in three predictable ways: the label lifts in the fridge, the ink runs when the jar sweats, or the printed information becomes illegible exactly where a customer or inspector needs it.

None of these is a printing problem. All three are material and adhesive decisions made before the press runs.

## Choose by storage condition

| Condition | Material | Adhesive | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ambient dry goods | Coated paper | Permanent acrylic | Cheapest, adequate |
| Chilled, condensation | PP | Chill-grade acrylic | Paper cockles and stains |
| Frozen (−18 °C) | PP or PET | Freezer-grade | Standard adhesive turns brittle |
| Oily or greasy surface | PP | Oil-resistant | Paper wicks oil and turns transparent |
| Hot-fill jars | PP | High-initial-tack | Steam and heat at application |

A "waterproof" claim without the storage condition behind it is meaningless. A label that survives a fridge door for a month may fail in a freezer within a week.

## Space for what has to be on the label

Food labels carry more mandatory text than any other category: product name, net quantity, ingredients, allergens, storage instructions, best-before date, batch code, and the producer or importer address — and the requirements differ between the US, UK and EU.

Two practical consequences. First, design the label around the text rather than shrinking the text to fit the design; a 5 pt allergen line is a reprint waiting to happen. Second, leave a clean area for the date and batch code, whether it is printed inline or overstamped later.

We print what you approve. The wording and its compliance with the destination market are the brand's responsibility, and we will flag when a design leaves no room for required information.

## Printing and finishing

Digital printing suits short runs and multiple flavours — the setup cost stays low when the artwork changes between SKUs. Lamination is worth it on chilled products: it protects the print from condensation and handling, and matte finishes hide water marks better than gloss.

## Variable data

Batch codes and best-before dates can be printed as variable data, so each label in a run carries a different code. Send a CSV with one row per label and confirm the field order in writing; a shifted column produces a whole run with the wrong dates.

## Quantity and cost

Food labels are priced on area, material, finishing and quantity, with freezer-grade and oil-resistant stocks costing more than standard paper. Small jar labels at 50 units are the cheapest entry point; large wrap labels on synthetic stock are the most expensive per unit at the same quantity.

## Ordering

Tell us the product, the storage condition (ambient, chilled, frozen), the container, the size and the quantity. If mandatory text is still being finalised, order a plain sample first to test adhesion before committing to the printed run.
