# Waterproof Labels

> Waterproof labels: which materials survive condensation, immersion and freezing, and how the adhesive, not the print, decides whether they hold.

Category: labels · Minimum order: From 50 units · Lead time: Typically 7–12 working days after artwork approval

## "Waterproof" is not one property

A label can be water-resistant (survives splashes), waterproof (survives repeated wetting) or immersion-grade (survives being submerged). The three need different materials, and a supplier who promises "waterproof" without asking where the label goes is guessing.

The right question is not "is it waterproof" but "what does it have to survive, for how long".

## What actually fails

| Failure | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Edges lift | Paper face stock absorbs water | Switch to PP or PET film |
| Ink runs or fades | Unlaminated print on absorbent stock | Laminate, or print on film |
| Label slides off | Adhesive loses tack when wet | Water-resistant acrylic adhesive |
| Label cracks in freezer | Adhesive goes brittle below −18 °C | Freezer-grade adhesive |
| Wrinkles on the bottle | Stiff film on a small diameter | Thinner face stock, curved adhesive |

Note that four of the five are adhesive problems, not printing problems.

## Materials

**PP (polypropylene)** is the workhorse: water-resistant, flexible enough for squeeze bottles, and available in white, clear and metallised versions.

**PET** is stiffer and more chemically resistant — the choice for household chemicals, oils and products that may meet solvents.

**Clear film** gives the no-label look, but colours need a white ink layer behind them or they read translucent.

**Water-resistant paper** exists and is useful for short-life chilled products where cost matters, but it is not immersion-grade and will not survive a cooler full of ice for a week.

## Testing before the run

The honest way to specify a waterproof label is to test it: apply a sample to the actual container, leave it in the actual condition (fridge, ice bucket, shower, dishwasher cycle) for the intended life, and look at the edges. A manufacturer's data sheet is a starting point, not a guarantee for your container and your conditions.

We can produce a physical sample for exactly this test before the production run.

## Printing and finishing

Digital printing on film with lamination gives the best water resistance at short runs. Lamination matters more here than in any other category: it is the layer that keeps water away from the ink.

## Quantity and cost

Film stocks cost more than paper, and lamination adds a pass. At 50 units, a waterproof label may cost two to three times a paper label of the same size — which is the correct comparison, because the paper one will fail in the application.

## Ordering

Tell us the condition (splash, repeated wetting, immersion, freezing), the duration, the container and the quantity. If the condition is unusual — chlorine, alcohol, oil — say so; adhesive and film selection changes.
