What the no-label look actually requires
A clear label is not invisible. It is a film whose edges and surface disappear when the design and the container cooperate. Three things decide whether it works:
- The container — clear glass or smooth plastic. On a textured or frosted surface, the film shows.
- The white ink — colours printed directly on clear film are translucent. A white layer behind them makes them opaque; without it, a red logo over amber liquid reads brown.
- The application — bubbles and fingerprints are far more visible under clear film than under white paper.
That is why clear labels are often the most expensive way to look minimal, and occasionally the best.
When clear works
| Container | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Clear glass bottle, smooth | Excellent — the classic no-label look |
| Clear PET bottle | Good, but static makes application fiddly |
| Frosted glass | Works if the frosted effect is intended |
| Coloured or dark glass | Needs a full white flood or it disappears |
| Textured or recycled paper | Poor — film edges show |
Designing for clear
Design in layers. The white ink layer defines what is opaque; the colour layer sits on top; the varnish or laminate defines the finish. Areas without white ink stay transparent, which is how a “floating” logo works.
Two practical rules: keep fine text on a white area, and avoid thin white outlines on a busy background — they read as dirty edges.
Application quality
Clear film punishes hand application. Small bubbles that are invisible on white stock catch the light on clear film, and a slightly misaligned label on a transparent container looks like a mistake rather than a design choice.
For runs above a few hundred units on small containers, an applicator gives a visibly better result. If applying by hand, a wet application or a jig helps.
Materials and finishing
Clear PP is the standard, flexible and water-resistant. Clear PET is stiffer and clearer, better for premium spirits and cosmetics. A gloss finish maximises transparency; a matte finish gives a frosted effect that hides bubbles better than gloss.
Quantity and cost
Clear film plus a white ink pass costs more than white paper of the same size. At 50 units, expect clear labels to be among the more expensive options per unit — the premium buys the look, and it only pays off on a container that suits it.
Ordering
Send a photo of the container against a light background, the intended design (with a note on which areas should be transparent), the size and the quantity. We will tell you honestly if clear stock is the wrong choice for that container.

Questions we get before every order
What is the minimum order for clear labels?
50 units per design. Mixed designs can be combined in one order where the material and size match; ask us and we will confirm before quoting.
How long does production take?
Typically 7–12 working days after artwork approval. Delivery time depends on destination and shipping method, and is confirmed with the quotation.
What artwork do you need?
A vector file (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) at final size, with fonts outlined. If you only have a PNG or JPG, send the highest resolution you have and we will tell you whether it is usable before you pay anything.
