Cost and ordering
What actually affects custom label pricing
Five variables that move a label price — area, material, finishing, quantity and cutting — and how each one changes the unit cost at 50 versus 5,000 units.

Label pricing looks opaque because five variables move at once. In practice, each one behaves predictably, and knowing which to change is how a quote gets cheaper without losing quality.
The five variables
| Variable | Effect on price | Lever |
|---|---|---|
| Printed area | Roughly proportional to material use | Smaller label, less text |
| Material | Paper < PP < PET < speciality | Match to condition, not to habit |
| Finishing | Laminate, foil, spot UV add passes | Skip laminate indoors |
| Quantity | Setup amortised over more units | Combine designs, reorder |
| Cutting | Simple shape < custom die | Circle instead of contour |
Area
Material and ink scale with printed area. Doubling the area roughly doubles material cost but barely changes setup — which is why small labels at high volume are cheap and large labels at low volume are expensive.
If a label is 20% larger than it needs to be, that is 20% more material on every unit for the life of the product.
Material
Paper is cheapest, PP is mid, PET and speciality films are higher. The mistake is choosing paper for a chilled product to save 20% — the reprint costs more than the saving.
The right question is not “what is the cheapest material” but “what is the cheapest material that survives the application”.
Finishing
Lamination, foil and spot UV are extra passes. Each adds cost and, in the case of foil, a die.
Lamination is the one finish that is often a false economy to skip: it protects the print, and on a handled product its absence shows within weeks.
Quantity
Setup is fixed. At 50 units it is most of the price; at 5,000 it is a rounding error. This is why the per-unit price curve is steep at the start and flat later.
Combining designs into one order shares the setup where material and size match — the most reliable way to reduce a first order’s unit price.
Cutting
A circle or rounded rectangle uses a standard die or a plotter path. A custom contour needs a die above a few hundred units, which is a one-off cost that never disappears.
At 50 units, a simple shape can be half the price of a complex contour.
What does not affect price much
- Number of colours in digital printing (unlike flexo, where each colour is a plate).
- Artwork complexity, unless it requires manual prep.
- Delivery speed, unless you pay for express production.
What this means for buyers
Change the shape before changing the material. A simpler cut often saves more than downgrading the stock — and does not risk the application.
Combine designs to share setup. Three 50-unit designs in one order cost less than three separate orders.
Do not optimise the unit price on the first run. The goal of the first order is to validate; the second order is where volume pricing applies.
Ask for the price breakdown. A quote that separates setup, material and finishing shows which lever to pull.
Quick answers
What makes custom labels expensive?
Five things: printed area, material, finishing, quantity and cutting. At low volume the fixed setup dominates, so the unit price is high even though the material cost per label barely changes. Quantity is the largest single lever once a design is proven.
Are labels cheaper per unit at higher quantities?
Yes, because the setup is fixed and spreads across more pieces. The curve is steep at the start and flattens out, which is why the price at 50 and at 5,000 can differ by a factor of several while the material cost per label hardly moves.
