Production lead time: what actually takes the time
Where the days go between approval and delivery — artwork check, proofing, print, finishing, packing — and how to compress a schedule honestly.

A quoted lead time is a sum of steps, and most of them are not printing. Knowing the sequence tells you which delays are yours to control.
The sequence
| Stage | Typical duration | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork check | 1 day | Supplier, needs your file |
| Proof and approval | 1–3 days | You |
| 1–3 days | Supplier | |
| Finishing (laminate, die, foil) | 1–3 days | Supplier |
| Packing | 1 day | Supplier |
| Shipping | 1–7 days | Carrier |
Our standard window is 7–12 working days from proof approval — not from order. That distinction is where most schedules slip.
The two delays that are yours
Slow approval. A proof sitting in an inbox for four days adds four days to delivery. Nothing the printer does can recover it.
Late artwork changes. A revision after approval resets the proof and often the setup.
If a launch date matters, approve within 24 hours and freeze the file.
Compressing a schedule honestly
- Send print-ready artwork — bleed, CMYK, outlined fonts, cut path. Each missing element costs a round trip.
- Approve one proof, not three — decide colour and content together.
- Choose a simpler finish — foil and spot UV add passes; a laminated label does not.
- Order samples early — a sample run is a separate short cycle; do it before the launch crunch, not during it.
Express production exists but it buys press time, not approval time.
Shipping
Production lead time excludes transit. Domestic courier is typically 1–3 days; international express 3–7. If a delivery date is fixed, work backwards from it: shipping, then packing, then finishing, then print, then proof, then artwork.
What this means for buyers
The clock starts at approval, not at order. Plan the approval into the schedule.
Artwork quality is a lead-time variable. A print-ready file removes a day and a round trip.
Do not compress by skipping the sample. It is faster to sample once than to reprint once.
Build a buffer for the first order. Second orders are faster because the proof and die already exist.
Quick answers
How long does custom label printing take?
Our standard window is 7 to 12 working days from artwork approval, covering artwork check, printing, finishing and packing. Shipping is additional: one to three days domestically, three to seven by international express.
Can production be expedited?
Sometimes, and it buys press time rather than approval time. The steps before the press — artwork check and proofing — cannot be compressed much without risk. A print-ready file and a same-day approval do more for the schedule than paying for express production.
